Schuttersgalerij or Civic Guards Gallery in Amsterdam is located next to Amsterdam Museum with entrance from Kalverstraat 92 - here you can see 17 impressive portraits of Civil guards dating back to 17th century.

Civic Guards on those pictures are wealthy citizens of Amsterdam who volunteered for this duty. As they had to pay high price for painting their pictures, only the welthiest ones are represented here. These portraits were commissioned each year to commemorate civic guard service and charity work. Great master painters including Rembrandt were competing for the group portrait orders and  in fact Rembrandt's most famous monumental “Night Watch”  now exhibited at the Rijksmuseum was a group portrait of the city musketeers.
